Zinedine Zidane has insisted he will not resign after Real Madrid lost 2-0 to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

“From bad to worse” was the headline in Mundo Deportivo, while Sport’s front page was entitled ‘total crisis’.

The defeat leaves Real in danger of not reaching the last 16 with all four Group B teams still able to qualify.

Real though must beat leaders Borussia Monchengladbach next week to guarantee their passage.

It was Real’s second defeat by Shakhtar in this season’s competition after the Ukrainian side won 3-2 at the Bernabeu.

“I am not going to resign, not at all,” said Zidane.

“We are always going to have difficult moments, and we are on a bad run, but we need to keep going,” added the Frenchman, whose side suffered a shock 2-1 defeat by Alaves in La Liga on Saturday.

“I have the strength needed to turn the situation around and I am going to give everything to do that. So are the players.

“We played well and we deserved more. We just need to lift our heads up and think about the next game.”

Last month’s 1-1 draw with Villarreal was met with a staunch defence from the French boss.

“Don’t you guys worry,” he told reporters. “Carry on with what you are doing and I will keep on working.”

Things have only worsened from there though.

On Saturday, Madrid lost to Alaves, meaning the Spanish champions have now gone three games without a win in La Liga.

Kroos points to mentality

And midfielder Toni Kroos is aware that his side are struggling to score goals and admitted that his side’s problems are mostly mental.

“It’s all messed up, this season we’re struggling to score goals,” he said.

“It’s not a physical issue. I’m fine but when you lose it’s all negative. We have to keep working and try to win the last game.

“If you are on a winning run you’ve obviously got more confidence than if you’re losing – that’s normal. As a team you feel better when you win, but we have to win again; continue working.

“It’s tough to leave here with a 2-0 scoreline – at Inter we scored early and here it was nearly the same. Maybe we weren’t quite as good but we did produce a good first half.

“Once you’re 1-0 down everything costs you a bit more – then at 2-0 maybe we failed to believe totally that we could overturn it. We tried until the end though.”
