Wilson must prioritise “pivotal” Rangers colossus who is “extremely consistent” – opinion
According to Football Insider, Glasgow Rangers are keen to tie Connor Goldson to a new deal amid interest from Premier League clubs including Leeds United, Everton, West Ham and West Bromwich Albion.
What’s the word?
The 27-year-old has been an unstoppable force for Steven Gerrard’s side this season, scoring four goals across all competitions.
Football Insider claim that after attracting attention from several sides in the summer, Rangers are prepared to open negotiations over a new contract that would see him recommit his long-term future to the club.
Goldson reportedly earns wages worth £27,000-per-week with the Gers, although he will enter the final 18 months of his current contract in January.
Wilson’s top priority
Whilst most of the focus will be on any new Ibrox incomings, there will still be plenty of attention in terms of potential outgoings and contract talks with some of the senior players.
No doubt about it, Gerrard has a pretty bloated squad, but the likes of Leon Balogun, Steven Davis, Jermain Defoe and Allan McGregor all have their contracts expiring in 2021. In regards to the latter, losing the club’s first-choice goalkeeper for a cut-price fee would be a devastating blow, as he has kept four clean sheets in five games in the Scottish Premiership so far this season, so Rangers chief Ross Wilson will surely want to renew his deal.
However, if we’re being honest, Goldson should be Wilson’s top priority. Nikola Katic remains sidelined with a serious injury, as he isn’t expected to be back until January at the very earliest, whilst the least said about George Edmundson, the better. Meanwhile, the ever-reliable centre-back has established himself as a first-team regular starter under Gerrard. Comfortable at the back and confident on the ball, the “extremely consistent” Shrewsbury Town academy graduate is exactly the sort of player that the Ibrox boss needs to take his side to the next level.
Former Rangers forward Kris Boyd seems to agree, telling Sky Sports that the colossus is “pivotal” to how the Gers play their game. Given his age, the defender is arguably at the peak of his career right now. So, getting Goldson to agree to new and improved terms would send the right message to the rest of the players like Ryan Kent and the fans as well – gone are the days where the Gers would be outmuscled in the transfer market. Get it done Wilson, before it’s too late.
