Michael van Gerwen showed glimpses of his best form as he secured his place in the knockout stages of the Grand Slam of Darts by beating Gabriel Clemens in fine style (Van Gerwen 11/4 – Tournament Outright).
Mighty Mike has struggled for form of late, but he showed his potential at the oche with a 5-1 victory over Clemens. He has failed to progress past the semi-finals of any of his last five major ranking events, but he averaged 103.60 on his way to success against the German.
Van Gerwen will now need to turn his attentions to his match against Joe Cullen, after the latter won his final Group A clash 5-4 against Adam Hunt.
The Dutchman joins Simon Whitlock, James Wade, Dave Chisnall and Dimitri Van den Bergh in advancing through to the last 16 and he will fancy his chances against Cullen (Match Odds – Van Gerwen 4/11, Cullen 11/5).
Peter Wright, Gerwyn Price (7/2 – Tournament Outright) and Michael Smith all registered victories on Tuesday evening, as the world’s best players flexed their muscles.
Wright beat Ian White 5-3, Price beat Jonny Clayton by the same scoreline, while Smith proved too much for Jose De Sousa with a 5-2 success.
Elsewhere, Lisa Ashton was denied her first victory in Grand Slam history, as Krzysztof Ratajski produced a great comeback to fight back from 4-1 down to win 5-4.
Wednesday’s action starts at 15:00 GMT, with Whitlock facing 18-year-old Adam Gawlas in the opening match.
Chisnall tackles Justin Pipe, while Wade and Glen Durrant meet in a game that could steal the headlines (Match Odds – Wade 4/9, Durrant 7/4).
Gary Anderson returns to the stage to face Ryan Searle, while Rob Cross, Smith, Price and Wright are all in action in the evening session.
