Chelsea are planning to bring in more additions to their defence in next summer’s transfer window after a failed move for Jose Gimenez, according to one reliable journalist.

The Blues spent over £200million on talent in the recent transfer market, addressing all areas of the pitch. But after conceding 54 Premier League goals last term, defence was a priority.

As such, new goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and veteran centre-back Thiago Silva have brought stability to the back line. Indeed, Mendy already has seven clean sheets to his name in all competitions.

According to reporter Fabrizio Romano (via the Here We Go podcast), however, Chelsea wanted to sign Atletico Madrid’s Gimenez.

Romano said that the Blues were “so interested” in the Urugayan, but his release clause prevented them from swooping.

As such, Romano said to “pay attention” to Chelsea’s centre-back situation in the coming months.

Jimenez was the subject of links with a move away in the summer after he struggled with injury last season.

Indeed, he had several runs in the team before ducking out to spend time on the sidelines with muscle problems. This term, meanwhile, he has suffered from more muscle problems while also self-isolating with coronavirus.

The 25-year-old, who has three years left on his contract in Madrid, was reportedly a target for Manchester City.

As for Chelsea’s current options, further speculation has claimed that the Blues want to extend Silva’s contract. The Brazilian only signed a one-year deal but he has had a fantastic impact both on and off the pitch.

Elsewhere, Kurt Zouma has enjoyed a fantastic resurgence alongside him, following the Frenchman’s recent loan spells.

As such, Fikayo Tomori and Antonio Rudiger find themselves down the pecking order. Indeed, the former could reportedly take on a temporary spell away from Stamford Bridge in January to increase his game time.

Meanwhile, another Chelsea star who is facing selection troubles is striker Olivier Giroud.

The Frenchman cemented his importance to boss Frank Lampard by heading the Blues into the Champions League knockout stages on Tuesday.

Overall, though, he has admitted that his situation is “worrying”. Tottenham were linked with a move last January and are reportedly keen again.
