Gerwyn Price survived a scare in the Grand Slam of Darts on Monday.

Defending champion Gerwyn Price survived four match darts to overcome Mikuru Suzuki in his opening group match of the 2020 Grand Slam of Darts on an enthralling opening day on Monday (Gerwyn Price 7/2 – Grand Slam of Darts Outright).

Being played at the Ricoh Arena for the first time, there were plenty of day one shocks defeats at the Grand Slam of Darts and Price, who has won this tournament the past two years, was nearly one of them.

The Iceman hasn’t lost a game since the final group-stage match in 2018 but that statistic almost changed on Monday, with Suzuki missing four match darts before going down 5-4 in Group G.

Scotland’s Peter Wright was not so lucky as he lost by the same scoreline to Dirk van Duijvenbode in Group E, which Devon Petersen tops after comfortably beating Englishman Ian White 5-2.

Jermaine Wattimena produced a brilliant performance to beat Glen Durrant 5-1, while there were also victories chalked up by Michael van Gerwen, Rob Cross, Gary Anderson, who is 20/1 to win the Grand Slam of Darts, and James Wade.

The nature of the tournament means the players that lost on day one still have the opportunity to qualify for the knockout stage and Tuesday brings about a quick chance for redemption.

In the first session, which starts at 13:00, Durrant will take on Damon Heta, who lost 5-2 to Wade, and ‘Duzza’ is 6/4 to pick up the win while his Australian opponent is the 8/15 favourite.

Anderson’s clash against Simon Whitlock looks to be the pick of the afternoon encounters, with the ‘Fly Scotsman’ 8/11 to get the better of his Aussie foe, who is priced at 11/10.

Cross and Dave Chisnall also face off in Group D, while Nathan Aspinall and Dimitri Van den Bergh go toe-to-toe in what should be a cracking contest (Aspinall 4/5, Van den Bergh EVS – Grand Slam of Darts Match Result).
