Michael van Gerwen (15/8 fav – PDC World Championship) made a winning start to his PDC World Darts Championship campaign by beating Ryan Murray, but Deta Hedman bowed out on Saturday.

Van Gerwen has enjoyed plenty of success in previous appearances at the competition, winning the title on three occasions and reaching the semi-finals in seven of the last eight years.

He made a fine start to this year’s edition when downing Murray 3-1 at Alexandra Palace on Saturday, ending the match with the highest average of the tournament so far,

2020 hasn’t been a great year by Van Gerwen’s high standards, with just five titles added to his impressive CV, however, he has a fantastic opportunity to start 2021 in style and will face either Ricky Evans of Mickey Mansell in round three.

Meanwhile, Hedman couldn’t match Adam Boulton when making her PDC World Championship debut, losing 3-1 in the opening round.

Hedman, who became the first woman to beat a man on TV 16 years ago, landed the first maximum of the match, but ultimately came up short.

Two-time BDO world champion Scott Waites set up a clash with Nathan Aspinall in round two (Match betting – Aspinall 1/3, Waites 12/5) after coming through a tense meeting with Canada’s Matt Campbell, which went down to a last-leg decider.

There’s plenty more action set to take place on Sunday, with a huge contingency of Dutch players hoping to progress.

Derk Telnekes, Maik Kuivenhoven, Vincent van der Voort, Ron Meulenkamp, Martijn Kleermaker and Jeffrey de Zwaan will all step up to the oche.

The majority of Sunday’s engagements come in the first round, with Teinekes squaring off against Nick Kenny (Match betting – Telnekes 10/11, Kenny 10/11), Jason Lowe facing Dmitiriy Gorbunov, Kuivenhoven taking on Matthew Edgar, Kleermaker meeting Cameron Carolissen, while it’s an all English affair when Keegan Brown and Ryan Meikle clash.

Sunday’s other all-British tie sees Wales’ Jonny Clayton and Scotland’s John Henderson meet for a spot in round three, while the other second-round ties see De Zwaan take on Ryan Searle and Van de Voort face Meulenkamp.
