Outspoken star derides Man Utd over decision to let star move to Italy
Watford striker Troy Deeney reckons Manchester United made a “strange” decision in selling Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan.
The bulky Belgian striker joined United in summer 2017 for a fee of £75m.
While he netted a decent 42 goals in 96 games at Old Trafford, he was never quite seen as being of ‘United quality’.
And having fallen out of favour under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, it was no surprise when United sold him to Inter.
However, Lukaku has flourished under Antonio Conte at the San Siro. He is now just one goal away from equalling his tally for United – but in close to 40 games less.
Deeney reckons United’s decision to offload Lukaku though was odd. Furthermore, he claims the player has shown just how good he is in Serie A.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Deeney said: “He’s very good, and I always thought it was a strange one when United got rid of him.
“They kind of wanted a complete player because his goal record wasn’t that bad, to be honest.
“But I do understand why people were getting a little frustrated in terms of when he was at United.
“When he’s gone out to Italy you can see the tactical side of it and coaching side of it has really improved his game. He’s got a point to prove.
“He’s been a beast of a human being since he was 16; everyone was saying ‘look at the talent’.
“And the goals are there now. In games you can see how strong he is, his link up play is good and he got an assist technically for the goal [against England].”
Keane raves about Jack Grealish
The Three Lions lost 2-0 to Belgium, who are ranked no.1 in the world. Grealish, however, was the best player on the pitch.
Keane says that Grealish has improved markedly in the last six months. Furthermore, he says it’s no surprise United were linked with the player.
“He takes risks. What I love about Jack – and I worked with him at Aston Villa – is his courage,” Keane told ITV, as cited by the Metro.
“Wanting the ball in tight areas, dealing with the ball, getting you up the pitch, winning free-kicks, courage, he’s quicker than you think.
“The way he’s improved over the past six months has been fantastic. We keep talking about England winning something or getting to the next level, I think they need a player like Jack to do that. He was outstanding.”
