Newcastle must look to offload Miguel Almiron after his agent revealed that clubs are interested in luring him away from St James’ Park.

What’s the story?

The Paraguay international has endured a nightmare spell on Tyneside since joining from Atlanta United, managing just nine goals in 62 games.

Now, in an interview with a Paraguayan radio station, Almiron’s agent has opened up on how his client could have left the club in the summer, and that an exit remains on the cards.

He said (as quoted by The Chronicle): “Look, I was able to come in contact with their coaching staff (Atletico Madrid) and they told me that they were interested and just scouting him, but never in the position to make an offer.

“They were just looking at him. But I think in the future, it’s possible, why not? There are also big teams in England for which they are inquiring about him and we talk. I have no doubt will leave, I think it will happen soon, perhaps in June (2021).”

Steve Bruce must make ruthless call

After arriving for a then club-record fee, it’s fair to say Almiron hasn’t exactly delivered on expectations at St James’ Park.

This season has arguably typified his time at the club, scoring just one goal in ten games, and finding himself in and out of the side in the Premier League – he’s played the full 90 minutes just twice.

Despite Steve Bruce admitting earlier last month that Almiron would have a “big part to play”, and called him a “top, top player”, Newcastle must make a huge U-turn on the versatile attacker.

Almiron’s agent has given the Magpies the ammunition to try and offload him and potentially recoup some of the money they initially paid Atlanta to sign him. So whilst Bruce himself is still seemingly a big fan of the Paraguayan, Newcastle surely have to offload him and ensure one of their most under-performing players is out the door.
