• England 70-14 Canada
  • Jamie Blamire and Adam Radwan grab hat-tricks

Marcus Smith scored 18 points in England’s rampant 10-try victory over Canada before he was promptly whisked off to join the British & Irish Lions in South Africa. It marks the latest step in a remarkable season for the 22-year-old Smith, with Warren Gatland having concerns over Finn Russell’s achilles and calling on the Harlequins fly-half as cover.

The Lions announced the news early in the second half here but Smith, oblivious despite the best efforts of some of the Twickenham crowd to let him know, played on until the 65 minute before he was taken straight down the tunnel and informed. It is yet more Roy of the Rovers stuff for Smith, who spearheaded Harlequins’ Premiership title win and considering the season he is having you wouldn’t put it past him having a critical say against the Springboks.
