Levy could land Mourinho his next Terry with £50m Spurs swoop for "special" titan – opinion
The man everyone appears to be after, Ben White, has once again been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur…
What’s the word?
According to Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas, Spurs are one of several top Premier League teams monitoring the Brighton and Hove Albion defender ahead of the New Year.
Both Manchester United and Chelsea are also mentioned in the article as the 23-year-old continues to impress following a successful loan spell with Championship winners Leeds United last term.
In the summer, White signed a new four-year contract extension and has since become a regular under Graham Potter.
Mourinho’s next Terry?
The report goes on to claim that that the Seagulls centre-back is among the top-four defenders in the English top-flight right now, ranking behind Blues duo Kurt Zouma and Thiago Silva as well as Arsenal’s Gabriel.
White has started all ten of their league outings this term, averaging two aerial duels won, 2.1 interceptions, 2.2 tackles per game as well as a passing accuracy of over 80%, per WhoScored.
Despite the signing of Joe Rodon before the domestic deadline, Jose Mourinho could ultimately do with another option in the role as the club did lose Jan Vertonghen on top of sending Juan Foyth out on loan.
And now with Toby Alderweireld on the treatment table, the Portuguese boss is left short on bodies.
Unlike Rodon, White has proven his worth at this level with a string of PL appearances, but it is instead his comparisons to a former great that should have Spurs eager to secure him at all costs.
Sky Sports pundit Andy Hinchcliffe told their EFL podcast: “I totally agree with [the] Stones and Ferdinand [comparisons] but also, you put a bit of John Terry or Gary Cahill in there, which I think he’s got, imagine the centre-half.”
The ‘Special One’ won three PL titles and one FA Cup with Terry as his captain, so he must be relishing the chance to unearth a modern-day prototype of his star man.
However, it’s thought that his price tag is much closer to the £50m number, according to The Sun, so it’ll be on Daniel Levy to pull out his chequebook either in January or in the summer window.
It could be the decider between a good and great season.
AND in other news, Spurs can strike huge blow to Arsenal by winning race for £20m gem…
