Jurgen Klopp says the performance against Leicester has him believing more than ever that his squad are “invested” in each other and ready to fight.

Many pundits predicted a tough game against the then Premier League leaders. Ian Wright said the champions were in for a “painful” evening at Anfield with Virgil van Dijk, Mo Salah, Jordan Henderson, Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold all missing.

It did not pan out that way though with Klopp’s men putting in a masterful performance to win 3-0.

Explaining the strength in his players in his programme notes for Wednesday’s Champions League game with Atalanta, Klopp said: “As difficult as it has been recently, it does present an amazing opportunity.

“We saw in the performance against Leicester City just how determined and together we are. I saw a group who is full of courage and full of fight.

“We are going to need all our qualities from now until May. We will need to squeeze from ourselves more than we have ever done previously.

“I have complete faith in our group, from the most experienced player through to our youngest.

“Our performances so far, in the face of adversity, shows me these boys believe in what we do but more importantly they believe in each other.

“They trust each other. They are invested in each other. That can be our ‘secret sauce’.”

‘Thank God I have a pretty smart team’

Klopp was asked about his defensive problems at his press conference on Tuesday and whether he had worked on new things with different players.

Klopp said: “When would we do extra work? We’re here or we’re playing. There’s no time for extra work.

“Thank God I have a pretty smart team, the work is in the meeting room. Not a lot on training pitch.

“I really think it is funny to talk to us about defensive struggles, yes, at Villa we conceded seven goals and we won’t forget that. Before that we didn’t defend bad. We know how to defend. How the boys do it is exceptional.

“But we have to keep doing it because we have only played nine games in the Premier League and three in the Champions League.

“There are so many games to play and we will try to be as spot on as we can in specific games. Different line-ups but we cannot change that.

“The boys have to adapt immediately. Interesting situation. It’s not all worked on the pitch because the schedule doesn’t give us that time.”
