Liverpool forward Diogo Jota says that boss Jurgen Klopp’s advice was crucial in helping him find a way into the club’s star-studded attack.

Jota arrived at Anfield with question marks about how he would fit in. Indeed, with Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino for company, an immediate starting role looked a challenge.

However, the Portuguese has defied expectations with nine goals in 15 games since his move in September. What’s more, he has displaced Firmino in the team on more than one occasion.

Speaking to The Athletic, Jota noted that he faced a unique test upon signing for Liverpool. With the season already underway in September, the onus was on him to prove his worth to those around him – and his manager.

But the 23-year-old has revealed how a chat with Klopp helped him overcome that challenge.

“When you reach a new club, having an open mind is key to be able to adapt as quickly as possible,” Jota said. “With the season underway already, it was up to me to find a way to get into the team and not the opposite.

“That’s what I did with the help of Jurgen. He’s a fantastic manager who took care of me.

“When I first arrived, he had a meeting with me and he explained how the team works.

“Then it’s down to the player to try to learn as fast as you can and to prove to the manager that you can be an important player for him on the field.”

Jota has expelled all the question marks surrounding his suitability to Liverpool. Indeed, Klopp has revealed that he spotted the player’s ability to fit into his team when he first watched him for Wolves.

What’s more, with his immediate impact, Michael Owen believes that the winger is the signing of the season.
