Tottenham Hotspur could form a lethal-looking frontline for the 2022/23 campaign if reports are to be believed…

What’s the word?

According to Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, Spurs are working to sign Lautaro Martinez ahead of next season, having previously missed out on him in the summer transfer window.

It’s believed that the 24-year-old is still on sporting director Fabio Paratici’s shortlist and that manager Antonio Conte would happily welcome a reunion in north London.

Whether the Lilywhites manage to secure his signature in the summer remains to be seen but any move for the 37-cap Argentina international would be an expensive one with Transfermarkt valuing him at £72m.

Imagine him and Harry Kane

Conte is yet to turn to it but his wing-back system with two strikers up top proved to be hugely successful at the San Siro as the Italian sleeping giants clinched their first Serie A title in over a decade last season.

In signing Martinez, he could look to replicate the partnership he had with Romelu Lukaku but this time, with Kane, who has bagged 17 goals in 34 appearances this season, adding to his tally of 33 across all competitions in 2020/21.

The Inter forward has been in a similar vein of form in that time, scoring 12 times in 32 matches this term, building on last season’s total of 19 goals.

Pairing the two together is not just a mouth-watering prospect but one that should strike fear into many a Premier League defence.

It’s also an even more appealing prospect given the history Conte has had with the 5 foot 9 talisman, who he once deemed to be a “juggernaut“, whilst the goalscoring phenom has also been lauded by international teammate Lionel Messi in the past.

“He’s spectacular. He has impressive qualities. You could tell he was going to be a great player, and he is showing that. He’s very strong, really good one on one, scores a lot of goals, and in the area he fights with anyone, holds it up, he can turn, scrap to win it all on his own. He has a lot of quality. He’s very complete,” he said to Mundo Deportivo.

Also dubbed a “special talent” by verified journalist Joshua Jones, Martinez could well be worth every penny in any blockbuster deal this summer. Both he and Kane would provide Conte with the goals required to get back to the top-end of the Premier League and maybe beyond.
