Guardiola will be racking his brain on £72m-rated MCFC ace, he failed to turn up again – opinion
Manchester City confirmed their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League with a 1-0 win against Olympiakos on Wednesday night but the performance of Bernardo Silva may have worried Pep Guardiola.
The Portuguese winger was trusted to start by the Spanish manager despite his poor form so far this season, with the former Monaco man having failed to contribute a single goal or assist in any competition during the current campaign.
Unfortunately, Silva failed to repay his manager’s faith, as he produced another disappointing display in Piraeus.
As per SofaScore, the 26-year-old earned a 7.0 rating for his display, with only Raheem Sterling and Ederson earning lower match ratings.
His passing was fairly accurate, with 46/51 of his passes finding their mark, resulting in a pass accuracy rate of 90% but it was his form in front of goal that may have concerned Guardiola the most.
The Portuguese international missed his first great chance of the night shortly after the hour mark, hitting the ball straight into the arms of Jose Sa when it rebounded to him inside the six-yard box, whilst he also put another chance wide when he was put through on goal later in the game.
Silva also struggled to keep the ball during the match, as he lost possession on 13 occasions during his time on the pitch.
He was also second-best on a number of occasions, as of the 10 duels he was involved in during the game, he was able to win just three.
The winger, rated at £72m by Transfermarkt, has been extremely impressive in the past for City but after another display without a goal contribution, surely it is time Guardiola dropped him from his starting XI.
After impressing in the Nations League for Portugal, he earned the praise of Jamie Redknapp, with the pundit telling Sky Sports:
“I don’t think Van Dijk realised how quickly Bernardo Silva had assessed the situation. To have the peripheral vision and the awareness to know the weight of pass, where and when to pass it, because when that ball is played to him he has no clue who is around him really, but he understands where his teammate is going to be. It’s a brilliant pass. He now looks like one of the top players in Europe.” (per Sports Keeda)
Hopefully, it won’t be too long until Silva is back to his best but at the moment, he definitely looks short of confidence in front of goal.
