Rio Ferdinand says that Jurgen Klopp’s post-match rants about fixture scheduling resemble the way that Sir Alex Ferguson used to “control the narrative” at Manchester United.

Klopp has launched two tirades against separate broadcasters in recent weeks for his side’s fixture pile-up.

The most recent came on BT Sport after last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Brighton. Klopp was unhappy that his side were playing at 12.30pm on Saturday after their Wednesday night game.

In choosing not to hide his views, Klopp’s interviews have instead become the centre of attention. But Ferdinand has said that the German may be using the tactic to distract from on-field problems which could affect his team’s Premier League title defence.

Indeed, the ex-United defender spoke to BT Sport about how Ferguson did similar during his Old Trafford reign.

“Sometimes he’d [Ferguson] do a team talk after a game and be as calm as you like,” the pundit said (via the Daily Mail).

“And then he’d go out for an interview and we’d see him on the TV screen and he would be going bananas about a decision no-one had even thought about.

“But that took the spotlight off someone else or something else that could derail us. He controlled the narrative and I think that’s what Klopp is doing very well at the moment.

“Maybe sometimes he’s talking about stuff outside of that [game] which can take away from the performance or the little creaks that happen within the 90 minutes.”

Despite his rants over player welfare, though, Klopp has tried not to make headlines over his criticism of VAR.

Liverpool suffered three times against Brighton last weekend, including when Danny Welbeck earned a penalty in the last minute.

Klopp provides injury update

Since last Saturday’s draw, though, Liverpool have sealed top spot in Champions League Group D.

They did so with a 1-0 defeat of Ajax at Anfield on Tuesday and the result means that the Reds can rest players for next week’s trip to face Midtjylland.

But in Tuesday night’s game, Alisson Becker, Jordan Henderson and Andy Robertson all faced fresh injury doubts.
