Celtic must take chance on "outstanding" £1.5k-p/w target, could replace Elyounoussi – opinion
Celtic have been urged to revisit their interest in Charlton winger Alfie Doughty. The Hoops officially registered a bid for the 20-year-old, but talks didn’t come to fruition during the summer window. Athletic manager Lee Bowyer accused Nick Hammond and co of making “silly offers”.
Unfortunately for the player, he has picked up a hamstring injury and is set to be on the sidelines for a large chunk of the season. However, Noel Whelan believes that Celtic can use this to their advantage and strike a deal with Doughty in January.
Celtic must take a chance on Doughty
Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan said: “When you’re down to a year of your contract and it looks like you’re not gonna be playing the season again, even in January, there’s always a deal on the table if you’re not going to be signing the contract with your parent club.”
Indeed, Doughty’s current contract is set to run out next summer and he may not play for the Addicks again if he doesn’t sign a new deal. Whilst Bowyer is keen to tie the winger down, if the right offer comes in, he could be tempted to move onto pastures new.
Celtic’s impressive history will be an enticing offer for the 20-year-old, who the Charlton boss has branded as an “outstanding” player.
Particularly if Neil Lennon loses Mohamed Elyounoussi, they will need to fill a huge gap in their left flank. The Norwegian is currently only in Glasgow on loan and Ralph Hasenhuttl’s recent comments could hint that he has a future at Southampton.
Should the Saints make space for Elyounoussi in their squad, guaranteed Premier League football should be enough to make him want to remain on the south coast. If this is the case, the Hoops will be in hot water as the makeshift striker has been one of their main sources for goals this season.
Whilst signing an injured player is a scary thought, Doughty is currently earning just £1,500 per week in wages. He is yet to earn a Transfermarkt value, meaning that with time ticking down, it shouldn’t take much to sway him to join Celtic. Even if Elyounoussi stays, having an up-and-coming starlet in the ranks to bolster Lennon’s squad will be a big boost, especially if the player cost nothing to sign.
