Leeds are in a bittersweet situation after they decided to recruit two new right-wingers during the summer transfer window. Victor Orta brought in Helder Costa from Wolves (£16m) and Raphinha from Ligue 1 side Rennes (£17m).

The former enjoyed a loan spell at Elland Road before his move was made permanent. Costa bagged himself four goals and six assists in his Championship run last season, helping to guide the Whites to their long-awaited promotion back into the Premier League.

But after not scoring in six games this campaign and since being demoted to the reserve league, it could be time for Marcelo Bielsa to mix things up a bit in his attack.

Costa vs Raphinha

Although Leeds appear to be heavily stacked with talent across the front, their results would assume otherwise. The Whites have just one win in their last five Premier League games and recently suffered back-to-back 4-1 defeats to Leicester and Crystal Palace. Whilst they aren’t in any serious trouble at the moment, things can rapidly turn sour if they continue to ship more goals than they’re scoring.

As it stands, Bielsa is relying solely on Patrick Bamford to find the back of the net, which isn’t enough to keep them afloat. Raphinha’s shift against Arsenal showed that whilst he was wasteful in front of goal, he was a handful to deal with defensively.

By continuing to deploy the Brazilian, his speed and precision on the ball will open up more chances for Bamford and get him into dangerous spaces. He took the place of £32,000 per week Costa against the Gunners and Leeds were able to play out a 0-0 draw.

The club’s official Instagram recently lauded the speedy winger with a video tribute from his Arsenal performance along with the caption “Raphinha can nutmeg a mermaid!”

Whilst it will be a tough decision to choose between which of the two new recruits should start on a regular basis, Bielsa must pay close attention to their training sessions and act purely on gut instinct. Raphinha will certainly offer up something new and after all, that is why the Whites signed him in the first place.
